The mysterious legend of King Arthur brings visitors to Tintagel, with its ruined castle and nearby Boscastle is also popular with visitors. A drive of around 50 minutes from Cider Cottage will bring you to this lovely area on the north coast. In between the two villages we have discovered a delightful short walk (30mins return trip) through the wooded Rocky Valley, which follows a crystal clear river down to the sea. Small waterfalls and swirl holes interrupt its sparkling progress as it flows through the narrow glen-like valley. Along the way, the ruins of Trewethet Mill come into sight. Here, carved on a flat outcrop of rock, beside the buildings, are two mysterious labyrinth patterns. These are believed to date from the early Bronze Age 1800-1400BC, but are remarkably well preserved if they really are that old. The sea is soon reached and what a stunning sight. It was high tide when we arrived and the sea was crashing up the rocks and back into the river. The scenery here was truly beautiful even on a grey January day - we could imagine how super it would be on a sunny summer’s day. We extended our walk by climbing up the steep path towards Tintagel to take in the super views from the headland. We then returned to the valley, crossing a bridge and headed towards Boscastle, along the cliff path to the Ladies Window Rock Arch. This detour was well worth it, before retracing our steps back along Rocky Valley. We were so pleased to have discovered this memorable walk, full of variety and super views.
