Along with the varied wildlife visiting here at Cider Cottage we usually catch a few glimpses of deer. This year however we have been lucky to have many more visits than usual. Including two cute young fawns with their Mother. Although sightings cannot be guaranteed, there certainly seems to be more chance of seeing these lovely wild animals this year.Either by quietlytaking anearly morning peek into the woods, where our guests have already spotted the two babies. Or by just keeping a look out for these shy creatures. They are certainly getting bolder this year but will quickly take flight if they spot you. If you are not lucky enough to spot them on a visit here, there are always the buzzards soaring over the garden to bring wildlife to a stay at Cider Cottage, also owls hooting in the woods, woodpeckers and other varied birdlife, Hector our latest Pheasent visitor is often about too.

As the season draws to a close, for another year at Cider Cottage we can reflect on another busy season here in Cornwall. With guests visiting from all parts of the UK and as far away as Australia, Canada and Germany to share in this idyllic spot in the Cornish countryside. It has been great meeting everyone and hearing how much they enjoy the location and love staying at Cider Cottage. Our guests’ super reviews bear testament to that. Over the winter months we spend some time freshening things up in the cottage ready for our first visitors of the 2015 season at Easter. Our Cornish produce welcome pack will be waiting for them and the Easter Bunny may well pay a visit. We will look forward to welcoming our returning guests and all the new visitors who are yet to experience the unique charm of Cider Cottage and make their own happy memories here in beautiful Cornwall. Wildlife abounds in the countryside surrounding Cider Cottage and sometimes these wild creatures venture into the gardens, woods and driveway here. Buzzards are seen daily and their call is often heard alerting us to look up for these wonderful large birds soaring above. Woodpeckers can be heard in the woods and owls frequently visit during the night. We mostly hear the tawny with its familiar twit-twoo sound, which is in fact two different birds calling to each other, one with the twit and the other answering with the woo. We have also heard barn owls and little owls on occasion too. We have a friendly pheasant called Horatio and he is often seen in Cider Cottage’s garden, or sat on the gate or wall, hoping he stays out of sight of the fox who also visits occasionally. Hedgehogs are around often and mostly come out after dusk, but we seem to have a bold little one around at the moment who can be seen scuttling about during the day. A rarer sight are deer - they are shy creatures and we were very lucky to take a photograph recently of one in Cider Cottage garden. Much more common is this cheeky squirel that decided to have a peek in our window one day. Lastly, our least wild visitor is Archie, the cat with no tail, who is always around, with his own unique personality. So you never know who might pay a visit during a stay here in Cornwall. After the nice young lady from Visit England came to assess Cider Cottage, we were told that we had provisionally been awarded Four Stars. We were so pleased by the news. All our hard work over the winter months, renovating, improving and redecorating the cottage was worth it. It had resembled a building site, with electricians, builders and plumbers all doing their bit; together with obtaining certificates for the electrical appliances, the central heating boiler and such important jobs as fire safety risk assessments and inventories.
But it was worth it. And yesterday, the plaque was delivered, which has now been duly fixed to the wall. We now feel fully certified ! But it's good to know that a professional assessment has recognised the quality of what we have to offer our guests. |
